Memorial ACTe

Memorial ACTe Pointe-à-Pitre gp

Inaugurated in May, 2015, by French President François Hollande and 19 heads of state the Memorial ACTe, Caribbean Centre of Expression and Memory of Slavery & the Slave Trade, is the result of an ambitious project lead by the Regional Council of Guadeloupe since 2008. The Memorial ACTe is part of UNESCO’s Slave Route Project, a global initiative to promote the rapprochement of peoples through the shared legacy of this tragedy.

The Memorial ACTe is at once an architectural masterpiece and a committed museum, on the Darboussier site, which used to be a sugar factory. It is an essential for the cultural and historic discovery of the Caribbean.

good reasons to visit the Memorial ACTe

1.  An unique museum

Educational, accessible and also suitable for contemplation, the Memorial ACTe offers:

• A permanent 1 700m2 exhibition space describing the history of slavery from antiquity to the present day.

• A temporary 700 m2 exhibitions space dedicated to contemporary artistic expression.

• A panoramic 2,2 hectares  « Morne Mémoire » (Memory Hill Park),  offering a view of the sea, mountains and Pointe-à-Pitre town, with an orientation table and an ice-cream parlour.

A conference and visual arts hall, a media library, a genealogical research area, a panoramic restaurant, a bookshop and a gift shop complete this magnificent museum tour.

2. An architectural masterpiece: silver roots on a black box!

The black box houses a permanent exposition that represents, as such, foundations enriched with the knowledge of the past. Similarly, the speckled quartz box pays homage to the numerous victims of slavery and the slave trade. This box constitutes the base of a root structure made from shaped silver latticework. The roots evoke the quest of origins and connote momentum, growth, movement radiating across the world and self-expression. They also give a refined, dynamic and modern aspect to the building.

3. An ACTe for a new humanism

Fixed in the memory of slavery and the slave trade, the Memorial ACTe is first a place promoting a new humanism and a new understating between people, nations and cultures. Without giving a speech, the Memorial ACTe manages, thanks to its approach, to turn us towards another and realize that even with his differences, he is not very different from us.
